Virginia Raised Horse Featured in Saturday’s “Big Cap”

One of the year’s biggest and most historic thoroughbred races is tomorrow (Saturday March 12) — the $1,000,000 Santa Anita Handicap — and one of the 9 entrants has a key tie to Virginia!

Wildcat Red (4), under Luis Saez, edges General a Rod (5), under Javier Castellano, to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 22, 2014.

General A Rod, with morning line odds of 4-1, was bred by the Hare Forest Farm (Anne & Dick Poulson) and raised in Virginia. In 2014, he was third in the Florida Derby and competed in all three Triple Crown legs. The son of Roman Ruler is fresh off an optional claimer win at Gulfstream and will go to post at  7:30 PM (EDT) in Saturday’s 10th race at Santa Anita, which has three other graded stakes on tap. One of those is a key Derby prep — the San Felipe Stakes (Gr. II). Other 3 year old stakes around the country include the Tampa Bay Derby (Gr. II) and the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park.

You can also make future wagers on both the Kentucky Derby & Oaks from Noon Friday thru Sunday at 6 PM. It’s a great time of year to be a horseplayer. Bet with any of our on line wagering partners — TVG, XPressBet or Twin Spires.
