Colonial Downs Thoroughbred Race Season Opening Day

Date: August 8, 2019
Time: 5:55 pm  to  10:55 pm

Make plans to attend a landmark occasion in Virginia’s horse racing history — the grand return of thoroughbred horse racing to Colonial Downs in New Kent!

Horses will compete over the Secretariat Turf Course, which at 180 feet across is the widest grass surface in North America, and the 1 1/4 miles long dirt oval, the nation’s second largest — Belmont’s is 1 1/2 miles around. An average of $500,000 in purse monies will be given away daily this summer, which means the quality of competition is sure to please.

The 2019 season will continue on a Thursday thru Saturday basis until September 7th. Post time will be 5 PM.

Highlight of the meet is the 17th running of the Virginia  Derby on Saturday August 31st. The Grade 3 stakes has a  purse this year of $250,000 and attracts some of the country’s top three-year-old horses. A trio of additional stakes will  complement the Derby including the $150,000 Virginia Oaks. The last time the Virginia Derby was held at Colonial was in 2013.
