The Secretariat Monument is on the Move!

After starring as the center of attention in the Center of the Universe (Ashland, VA) our Secretariat Racing into History monument raced off for more destinations along the Triple Crown Trail!

Sculptor Jocelyn Russell and her road warrior crew departed Ashland on April 27 following a heartfelt “Secretariat Send-Off” in the town square.  Next stop – the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA for a quick visit before heading on to Kentucky.  (See photo below)

Here are some major highlights of their monumental tour so far, which has captured fans’ hearts and lots of media coverage:

April 30 – Secretariat monument was the Grand Marshal of the Kentucky Derby Festival Pegasus Parade, accompanied by Kate Tweedy, her sister Sarah Manning and Jocelyn Russell. (Pictured above)

May 3-6 – It was the star attraction at Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby, along with the National Museum of Racing traveling exhibition of Secretariat’s Triple Crown trophies.  The Secretariat for Virginia Team, in Meadow Stable blue, strikes a pose on the red carpet. The NBC broadcast featured many tributes to Secretariat. (Pictured above)

May 13 – Special appearance at Shenandoah Downs harness racing track in Woodstock, VA. (Above photo:  Courtesy of Darrell Wood)

May 18-20 – The Preakness at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD

June 8-11 – The Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY

July 13 – “A Tremendous Machine: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Secretariat’s Triple Crown” opens at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga.

Pony Up Update! 
The Secretariat For Virginia fundraising efforts are hitting their stride as well.  Ann Martin, president of the Ashland Museum, and Kate Chenery Tweedy, recently announced that the campaign has reached NEARLY HALF OF ITS $695,000 GOAL. To date, the amount stands at $325,000.  This includes corporate donations, foundation grants, in-kind contributions and individual donors.
